Elk Island National Park

Located just 35 minutes east of Edmonton, Elk Island National Park is a vital conservation oasis for Alberta’s wildlife. Fully fenced to protect its inhabitants, the park played a crucial historical role in the survival of the American bison, helping to save the species from extinction in the early 20th century. Today, it remains a sanctuary for significant populations of both plains and wood bison, as well as elk, deer, and over 250 bird species. As a member of the Beaver Hills Dark Sky Preserve, the park is a premier destination for wildlife viewing, hiking, paddling on Astotin Lake, and stargazing. It offers a tranquil escape into nature while preserving a key part of Canada’s natural heritage.
