Rainbow Lake
Incorporated in 1966 within Mackenzie County, Rainbow Lake is one of Alberta’s most northern and remote towns. Originally born during the oil boom, this community of fewer than 500 residents has evolved into a premier base camp for wilderness adventurers, outdoor enthusiasts, and travelers looking to step off the beaten path.
Surrounded by the vastness of the northern boreal forest, the area offers prime opportunities to spot diverse wildlife, including moose, black bears, wolves, migratory birds, and woodland buffalo. It is a highly regarded destination for hunting, as well as quad and snowmobile trail riding, and sport fishing for northern pike, walleye, and burbot. The town’s namesake lake, located just to the east, is perfect for summer canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding, and it transforms into an expansive ice fishing spot in the winter. The community also features a unique local highlight: the Rainbow Lake Golf & Country Club. This 9-hole course benefits from the north’s “white nights” in June and July, allowing golfers to play well into the night under a magical midnight twilight. Furthermore, the complete lack of light pollution at the 58th parallel makes the town an exceptional vantage point for witnessing spectacular, crystal-clear northern lights displays.
Seasonality and Activities:
Summer (June to August): Ideal for camping, canoeing, fishing, and midnight golf under extended daylight hours (up to 19 hours of light per day).
Autumn (September to October): Perfect for viewing the golden fall colors of the boreal forest and catching the return of vivid northern lights before the extreme winter cold sets in.
Winter (December to March): Tailored for winter adventurers interested in snowmobiling, ice fishing, and crisp auroral displays. Temperatures can drop below -40°C.
Amenities and Lodging: Though remote, the town is well-equipped with a recreation complex (including a hockey arena), a grocery store, a gas station, a few diner-style local restaurants, and accommodations such as the Rainbow Lake Inn and seasonal campgrounds.
Location and Access: Located in the far northwestern corner of the province. From High Level, the town is reached by traveling west on Highway 58 for approximately 130 km (about a 1 hour and 20 minute drive on a paved road). To reach the Rainbow Lake Provincial Recreation Area campground, travel 145 km west of High Level on Hwy 58, and then turn south on the access road for 45 km.
Travel Tip: Because Highway 58 is a resource road shared with large industrial trucks and service stations are rare, travelers are strongly advised to top off their fuel tanks before leaving High Level.
