Saskatoon Island Provincial Park

Established in 1932, Saskatoon Island Provincial Park is one of Alberta’s oldest provincial parks and has been designated as a federal Migratory Bird Sanctuary since 1948. Nestled on an isthmus between Saskatoon Lake and Little Lake, this beautiful park spans just over 100 hectares. Its unique blend of forests, wetlands, and native prairie provides a rich habitat for diverse plant and animal life, making it a well-known haven for the majestic Trumpeter Swan. While the lakes are not suitable for swimming due to low water levels and thick vegetation, they offer excellent conditions for canoeing, kayaking, and waterfowl watching. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the natural landscapes via the Shoreline trail (2 km) or the Little Lake trail (over 4 km), both of which are wheelchair accessible and wind through aspen stands and scenic meadows. The park also features two playgrounds, a basketball court, a small bike park, horseshoe pits, and two beach volleyball courts.

Seasonality: The park is open year-round, making it a wonderful destination to enjoy during any season.

Camping and Accommodation: Overnight guests can reserve a campsite across three camping loops, offering both powered and non-powered options. A group-use site situated right on the Saskatoon Lake shoreline is also available for reservation, complete with power, picnic tables, a private cook shelter, a fire pit area, a volleyball net, and vault toilets.

Driving Directions: Located just 20 minutes west of Grande Prairie. To get there, travel 21 kilometres west on Highway 43, then head 5 kilometres north on Range Road 81.
