Cave and Basin National Historic Site

Known as the birthplace of Canada’s National Parks system, the Cave and Basin National Historic Site holds a fundamental place in the country’s history. It was here in 1883 that the discovery of thermal springs by three railway workers led to the establishment of Canada’s first protected reserve in 1885. Located in Banff, the site allows visitors to explore a natural cave and emerald-colored outdoor mineral pools. Beyond its fascinating geology, the interpretive center and surrounding woodland trails tell the story of the evolution of nature conservation. It remains an essential landmark that celebrates the environmental and thermal heritage of the Canadian Rockies in a quiet, reflective setting.
