Notikewin Provincial Park

At the scenic confluence of the Peace and Notikewin rivers, Notikewin Provincial Park offers a peaceful outdoor retreat nestled within a densely forested valley. This tranquil wilderness destination features an intimate, well-treed campground with 19 unserviced sites available on a first-come, first-served basis, alongside a scenic day-use area. Perfect for nature lovers, the park is home to over 26 species of wildlife and an abundance of bird species, including sandhill cranes, various raptors, and several types of woodpeckers.

Outdoor Recreation: The park offers excellent shoreline fishing for walleye and northern pike. An open area along the riverbank serves as an undeveloped hand-launch site for canoes, kayaks, and powerboats. Depending on seasonal water levels, a natural sandbar beach emerges, providing a unique spot to relax by the water. Visitors can also explore the park’s rugged trail network, which is ideal for hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing in the winter.

A Rich Historical Legacy: The park’s name comes from the Cree word for “”battle,”” commemorating the historic conflicts fought here in the 1700s between the Cree and the Dane-zaa (Beaver) First Nations. The area also boasts deep roots in the fur trade; the Hudson’s Bay Company operated the Battle River House trading post on the riverbank for nearly 30 years. While time has erased most of the trading post, the historical traces of a 1920s trapper’s cabin can still be spotted just south of the day-use area.
